What is the Employee Assistance Program?
The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a service provided by the University its employees to aid them in addressing problems which have the potential for serious impact upon an employee's
performance at work, their personal lives and their families. These difficulties might include physical, mental or emotional concerns, finances, marital or family distress, alcohol or substance abuse or other issues.

 Who Can Use the EAP?
The EAP exists to help all employees of Laurentian University and their immediate dependents. This would include your spouse and any dependent children under the age of eighteen who reside in your household.

How Do I Use the EAP?
When you have a personal problem which has the potential to affect your ability to function within your job, contact the EAP Coordinator, Lyne Rivet at 675-1151, ext. 1055, for assistance. The Coordinator will give you information about the services available to assist you, the cost of the services and the extent to which the University will subsidize the costs. You may have the Coordinator make the referral appointment for you or you may choose to make the contact directly, after speaking with her.

 Is the EAP Voluntary?
Yes, the EAP is voluntary. Other people who are concerned about you may suggest it to you, but it is your choice to use the program. As with any problem, it is important to address your problem as soon as possible so that the situation does not worsen with the passage of time.

 Is the Program Confidential?
"Yes". Confidentiality will be maintained unless you give permission or if you reveal information which has the potential to cause harm to an individual's health or safety or when required by law. This applies to the Coordinator of the program, committee members and also to supervisor, union/association contacts or members of management who have been involved with your situation. Invoices from service agencies are sent directly to the EAP Office and your name is removed before the invoice is then forwarded to Financial Services for payment.

  How Much Will it Cost?
The cost will vary depending on the kind of help required. Some services are free; for others the University will pay a percentage of the fee and you will pay the remainder. Details about cost are available from the EAP Coordinator.

Do I have to Inform my Supervisor that I am using the EAP?
If you are seeking assistance during your regular working hours, you must inform your supervisor that you will be away from work, as you would for any other appointment. If your supervisor questions you on this, you may seek the assistance of the EAP Coordinator to address the matter.

Is there a Union or Association Representative for the EAP?
Yes. The Unions and Associations have representatives on the Employee Assistance Program Committee, a joint employee-management group which advises the University concerning the administration of the EAP. For the name of your representative call either the EAP Office, ext. 1055) or your union/association executive member or Personnel Services.

How May I Obtain a Copy of the EAP Policy?
Copies are available from the EAP Office, ext. 1055, or from Personnel Services, ext. 6581.
